Introduction
History
The Department of European Languages and Cultures (formerly known as Program in European Languages before 2011) is established in 2006 in the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures, NCCU. We recruit students into three groups: German, Spanish, and French. Each group is instructed in small class size, which allows instructors to integrate language training by focusing on listening, oral, reading and writing proficiency and to emphasize cultural acquisition, the cultivation of literature and the humanities.
Aims
Cultivate European language professionals and attain an international vision in Taiwan through an education devoted to European languages and cultures. The department aims to develop elites with multi-language proficiency, to strengthen education and academic research of European languages and cultures, and to reinforce the integration of inter-departmental resources in the school.
Cultivate potential European language teachers for secondary schools: to diversify the language proficiency of students in Taiwan and to develop their international vision.
Provide multi-disciplinary training in the European languages for talented individuals: to integrate language learning with the cultivation of literature and cultural studies, in combination with international affairs, regional studies and media education so as to develop well-rounded Taiwan professionals in the field of European affairs.

Directions
Fundamental European language training (listening, speaking, reading and writing): limiting class size, in combination with online instruction and instruction by native speakers for oral and listening training.
Courses in literature and culture: a historical introduction of culture and literature from the Classical period (Greek and Roman) to contemporary Europe, in order to comprehend the historical development of modern Europe.
Multi-disciplinary and multi-language development: to encourage students to take courses in different disciplines and languages.
Graduation Requirements
This is a four-year program committed to developing European language talents and to promoting cultural and educational communication with European nations and institutions. The program comprises three language groups: the French, German, and Spanish. This program is designed to let each group of students takes language courses separately.
