Department of European Languages and Cultures, NCCU

The Department of European Languages and Cultures (Formerly known as the Undergraduate Program in European Languages before the year 2011) is a newly established department in the College of Foreign Languages and Literature, NCCU. The program began in 2006, recruiting 60 freshmen each year. On the same year, the Master's Program in European Studies had been recruiting graduate students, but has stopped admitting applicants since the year 2012.

Aims and Objectives

Our goal is to cultivate European language professionals and attain a global vision while setting roots in Taiwan. In accordance with the Ministry of Education, our recurrent education system improves learning abilities to reinforce lifelong learning. Resource managements have been established to enhance the intergration and efficiency of acquiring resources.

2.         Cultivate potential European language teachers for secondary schools: to diversify the language proficiency of students in Taiwan and to develop their international vision.

3.        Provide multi-disciplinary trainings of European languages: to integrate language learning with the cultivation of literature and cultural studies, in combination with international affairs, regional studies and media education, so as to develop well-rounded Taiwan professionals in the field of European affairs. 

Target and Expectations

1.         Promote European language teaching, expand the international vision of students and increase their competitiveness.

2.         Meet the demands for European language professionals in the human resources market.

3.         Encourage cultural and economic interaction with European countries.

4.         Engage in European academic researches.

Curriculum

Our specialized class combines theoretical and practical aspects, asll well as integrated researches and interdisciplinary applications. Courses are designed to meet the following expectations:

1. Basic Courses: Basic knowledge of European studies
2. Specialized Courses: In-depth discussions of European studies (German, French, Spanish) 
3. Interdisciplinary Courses: Building knowledge of application
4. Methods of Research: Formal training in research methods
5. Thematic Discussions: Sharing practical experiences and theoretical analyses
6. Case Studies: Integration-orientated research and training
Methods of Research, Thematic Discussions, and Case Studies are required courses; Basic, Specialized, and Interdisciplinary Courses are elective courses based on the student's personal development and needs.


Course Structure

Lay a solid foundation by combining theoretical and practical research methods and thematic discussions; building applicational and professional competence through the Basic, Specialized, and Interdisciplinary Courses; working on case studies to realize the results of integrated research and interdisciplinary application, along with presenting them on a thesis paper.


Special Regulations

The minimum graduation requirement is 33 credits.

1. Every single course is worth 3 credits, students must take a minimum of 3 credits each semester.
2. The graduation requirement is 33 credits: 9 credits of required courses, 21 credits of elective courses, and 3 credits from the thesis.
3. The minimum year of study is 2 years, while the maximum year of study is 4 years.
4. Details regarding the master's thesis will be further announced.
5. Matters regarding credit transfers need to be approved by the Department.
